Similar to a scrimmage in sport, Creativity Scrimmages are a model of the “real game” of innovation. Repeated use builds the muscles of creativity, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration. They are great for team building, makerspace programming and curriculum enhancements. Make Creativity Scrimmages a regular part of your practice.
How does a scrimmage work?
The core of Creativity Scrimmages is design thinking. Solutions require strategic interpretation of the instructions, sharp use of time management and budgeting of materials if applicable. Each one has a brief description of the goal and clear instructions for the facilitator to set the stage of the challenge. Scrimmages that use materials have assigned budgets that can be utilized, adjusted or ignored at the facilitator’s discretion. There are also references to reflection questions and standards alignment.
Creativity Scrimmages are ideally completed by a team of 3 - 7 participants. They are even better when multiple teams are working toward the same goal. But one or two people can do them as well. Our materials list provides most of what’s needed for each scrimmage, though you may be asked to bring a scissors, some note paper or maybe a basketball. The materials used for the scrimmages and bases (sets the stage for the scrimmage) are very flexible and may be substituted by the facilitator. Each scrimmage’s set up instructions include alternative ways to create the bases to avoid unwanted expenses.
